CPR DONATES 1,618 KILOMETRES OF LANDS TO TRANS CANADA TRAIL NETWORK

Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) today announced the donation of 1,618 km (1,005 miles) of former railway corridors as a contribution to the 15,000-km (9.320-mile) Trans Canada Trail - the largest donation of its kind in Canadian history.

``CPR shares and encourages the vision of the Trans Canada Trail Foundation. The 1,618 km of dormant railway corridors the railway is donating today to the Trans Canada Trail project will soon find new life as trails of exploration, recreation and discovery for millions of Canadians and tourists for many decades to come,'' said Paul Clark, Vice-President, Communications and Public Affairs for CPR.

``Like those who went before them with the surveying and building of the CPR, Trans Canada Trail users will discover, again, the natural beauty and geographical diversity of Canada's many regions. CPR is proud to become a major contributor to the building of this new Trans Canada Trail.''

CPR announced the donation here today at a ceremony to unveil 6,000 new supporters of the Trans Canada Trail project. The Trans Canada Trail will be a 15,000-km (9,320-mile) recreation trail that will wind its way through every province and territory in Canada linking thousands of communities along its route. Upon completion on Sept, 9. 2000, it will be the longest trail of its kind in the world.

The railway donated 38 sections of former rail lines in six provinces (see attachment). The majority of these lands are in Alberta (14 sections) and Saskatchewan (15 sections), with an additional two sections in British Columbia, three in Manitoba, one in Ontario and three in Nova Scotia.

``The Trans Canada Trail Foundation views CPR's contribution as one of the most significant events in the history of the Canadian trail movement,'' said Sherman Olson, President of the Trans Canada Trail. ``This generous donation will not only be of benefit to the Trans Canada Trail, but to trail systems in six different provinces.''

As new owner, the Trans Canada Trail Foundation has assumed responsibility for the lands and will be assessing them to determine how they will best contribute to the coast-to-coast Trans Canada Trail project.

The Trans Canada Trail Foundation will take title for the CPR-donated lands over the next several months.
